Getting Plenty of Sleep

Getting plenty of sleep is a very important part of your personal safety. Most people need 7.5 - 8.5 hours of sleep each 24-hour day.

Sleep loss build up slowly over several nights can be as harmful as sleep loss in one night. Both produce a decline in performance such as slower reaction times, failure to respond to changes, and the inability to concentrate and make reasonable judgements.

research that tested a fatigued state from continues hours of wakefulness against blood alcohol levels concluded that:
1. 17 hours awake is equivalent to a blood alcohol content of .05
2. 21 hours awake is equivalent to a blood alcohol content of .08
3. 24-25 hours awake is equivalent to a blood alcohol content of .10

In addition to fatigue caused by shortened periods of sleep, the quality of sleep during the day is not the same as during the night. People have a natural tendency to be awake during the day. Every person has a circadian rhythm - an internal biological time clock. This rhythm follows body temperature and changes our level of mental alertness.

Typically, in a 24-hour period, our alertness is reduced between the hours of 3:00 and 5:00 during the day and the night. So during night shifts, workers are fighting against their natural rhythm to stay awake at a time when the would naturally sleep.

WINTER COLD PREVENTION

More than 100 viruses can cause colds, the world's most common illness, so few people escape being exposed to at least one of them.

Once it enters the body through the nose or throat, the cold virus begins to multiply, causing any of a number of symptoms: sore throat, sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes, aches and pains, mild fever, nasal congestion and coughing.

A cold usually lasts a week or two.

The best way to treat a cold is to take a mild pain reliever, avoid unnecessary activity, get as much bed rest as possible and drink plenty of fluids, especially fruit juices. Over-the-counter cough and cold remedies may relieve some of the symptoms, but they will not prevent, cure or even the course of the illness.

While there is no vaccine to protect you from catching a cold, there are ways to lessen your chances of coming down with the illness. Keep up your natural resistance through good nutrition and getting enough sleep and exercise. Turn your thermostat down and keep the humidity up in your home.

Dry air dries out the mucous membranes in your nose and throat and causes them to crack, creating a place where cold viruses can enter your body. Avoid direct contact with those who have colds and wash your hand frequently.

Congratulations

NIC would like to congratulate Ruan Kriek (Safety Manager - Head Office) and
Michelle Bloem on their engagement last night (23 July 2013)

FRIDAY ACCIDENT PREVENTION
Why you should always wear respectable nickers
on a Friday ;)

You wouldn't look forward to Fridays as much as you do if you were a car. Statistically more accidents happen on a Friday than any other day.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

Tip #1
Keep :( and :-O off the road. It is no small coincidence that most accidents happen on the day we're all contacting each other to make plans for the weekend. Do not text or make phone calls while driving.

Tip #2
Saving your eardrums could also save your life. A new study has found that listening to loud music in a car increases your chances of being involved in an accident. Keep the volume low.

Tip #3
Take an advanced drivers course. Advanced driving courses not only save lives, but also money. Better drives = Less accidents = Fewer claims = Lower premiums. Simple.

Tip #4
Regularly check the tread on your tyres and pay attention to the quality of the road. Smooth tyres and wet roads don't get along so well together; ensure they never meet.
