WINTER COLD PREVENTION

More than 100 viruses can cause colds, the world's most common illness, so few people escape being exposed to at least one of them.

Once it enters the body through the nose or throat, the cold virus begins to multiply, causing any of a number of symptoms: sore throat, sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes, aches and pains, mild fever, nasal congestion and coughing.

A cold usually lasts a week or two.

The best way to treat a cold is to take a mild pain reliever, avoid unnecessary activity, get as much bed rest as possible and drink plenty of fluids, especially fruit juices. Over-the-counter cough and cold remedies may relieve some of the symptoms, but they will not prevent, cure or even the course of the illness.

While there is no vaccine to protect you from catching a cold, there are ways to lessen your chances of coming down with the illness. Keep up your natural resistance through good nutrition and getting enough sleep and exercise. Turn your thermostat down and keep the humidity up in your home.

Dry air dries out the mucous membranes in your nose and throat and causes them to crack, creating a place where cold viruses can enter your body. Avoid direct contact with those who have colds and wash your hand frequently.

FRIDAY ACCIDENT PREVENTION
Why you should always wear respectable nickers
on a Friday ;)

You wouldn't look forward to Fridays as much as you do if you were a car. Statistically more accidents happen on a Friday than any other day.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

Tip #1
Keep :( and :-O off the road. It is no small coincidence that most accidents happen on the day we're all contacting each other to make plans for the weekend. Do not text or make phone calls while driving.

Tip #2
Saving your eardrums could also save your life. A new study has found that listening to loud music in a car increases your chances of being involved in an accident. Keep the volume low.

Tip #3
Take an advanced drivers course. Advanced driving courses not only save lives, but also money. Better drives = Less accidents = Fewer claims = Lower premiums. Simple.

Tip #4
Regularly check the tread on your tyres and pay attention to the quality of the road. Smooth tyres and wet roads don't get along so well together; ensure they never meet.

Toolbox Talk - Basic Ladder Safety

BASIC LADDER SAFETY

1.  Before using a ladder, inspect it to confirm it is in good working condition.

2.  The anti-slip feet at the bottom of the stepladder side rails must be present and in good condition prior to using the ladder.

3.  Ladders must not be placed in front of closed doors that can open toward the ladder. The door must be blocked open, locked, or guarded.

4.  A stepladder requires level ground support for all four of its side rails.

5.  A stepladder must not be used unless its base is spread fully open and the Spreaders locked.

6.  When climbing a ladder, it is safest to utilize Three Points-of-Contact because it minimizes the chances of slipping and falling from the ladder.

7.  The ladder you select must be the right size for the job.

8.  No climbing/standing on the top cap or step of any ladder.

9.  In order to prevent tipping the ladder over sideways due to over-reaching, the user must climb or work with the body near the middle of the steps. The ladder should be set-up close to the work. Never attempt to move the ladder without first descending, relocating the ladder, and then re-climbing. Do not attempt to mount the ladder from the side or step from one ladder to another unless the ladder is secured against sideways motion.

10.  A stepladder must never be placed upon any other objects such a boxes, barrels, scaffolds, or other unstable bases in a effort to obtain additional height.
